Mark Wahlberg: ‘I haven’t looked in a mirror in 10 years, I’ve got nothing to prove’

Go ahead and call me an idiot, but I got super-confused with the way GQ UK released their July cover story with Mark Wahlberg. I think they released the cover image more than a month ago, but they only got around to releasing some quotes from the piece (they actually put the full article online two days ago) this week. It’s weird. But we’ve never covered this stuff, although some of the quotes about Mark’s daughters sound similar to his recent People Mag interview. You can read the full GQ UK piece here, and here are some highlights:

Playing a father of teenage daughter in Transformers: “If Hollywood had its way, normally [in a movie like this] Nicola would play my girlfriend. But I wanted to embrace the idea of playing older, of playing” – he hesitates a moment – “what will be my reality in the very near future.”

His first daughter: “When I first found out we were having a girl, it was a little kick in the stomach. My mother was like, ‘That’s what you get!’ But it’s really been the greatest thing ever, because I have a wonderful relationship with [my daughter], that’s helped me in my other relationships and in my relationships with women in general.”

He’s more protective of his daughters: “My wife is very particular about what the kids can watch. I have a bit of a double standard. My boys, they want to watch everything, but I’m very protective of my girls.”

Preparation for the role: “Everyone’s different. I know some actors have their whole routine where they don’t want anybody around them [on the set], or they need to play music or whatever, but the James Cagney philosophy always made more sense to me. Prepare for the part. Be the part. And with no great effort, play the part.”

Why he turned into a great producer: “I got tired of waiting for the right project to drop on to my desk. If I don’t do it, nobody else is going to do it, and if I don’t tell everybody how to do it, it’s not going to be done the right way. I’ve got people where positive encouragement is going to get the best results and other people where I have to threaten to crack their head open.”

Aging: “Look, I’m 42 years old, I haven’t looked in a mirror in ten years. I don’t give a f*** how I look. If I have to prepare for a part physically, I will, but I’ve got nothing to prove. I’m not trying to impress anybody.”

I shuddered a little bit at “where I have to threaten to crack their head open.” This is the same guy who beat a man so badly that the man went blind in one eye. I have no doubt that Mark still has that kind of violence inside of him, but I guess we should also give him credit for transforming his life into something other than violent thuggery. But still… there are reminders and it feels like Mark makes enough people enough money that no one wants to bring up his past.

I also have to give Mark some credit for not whining about his movie star lifestyle. He never complains. I appreciate that and it’s worth noting because most of them DO complain.

Has Eva Mendes been ‘in hiding’ because she & Ryan Gosling are expecting?

I’m sorry I didn’t get to this sooner but I didn’t believe the first reports and I thought it could wait until tomorrow. Not so much. First, let me say this: Eva Mendes has been relatively quiet this year. I mean, she’s done some stuff, months ago, but the tri-weekly pap shots have stopped and we haven’t seen Eva and Ryan Gosling together in a while. People Mag even idly wondered back in May if they had already broken up or were close to breaking up. Ryan promoted Lost River in Cannes without Eva, which was weird because she’s actually IN the movie. So, I was expecting more breakup rumors. Instead we get lots of pregnancy rumors

Women of the world who dream of having Ryan Gosling’s baby: Eva Mendes has beat you to the punch! Star can reveal that the Hitch actress confirmed the newsto friends that she’s seven months pregnant with her boyfriend’s child.

Despite recent rumors of a breakup, things are going better than ever for the couple of three years. In fact, thanks to the baby news, the relationship has found a new sense of direction, with Eva finally secure in Ryan’s commitment — and even talking marriage!

Throughout her pregnancy, the 40-year-old has been in hiding at her home…but she’s not alone. “Ryan has been by Eva’s side night and day since she found out the happy news,” the insider says. “He’s so amazingly considerate and thoughtful, always taking care of Eva. It’s like he’s already a doting daddy! No one would be surprised if they got married before the baby is even born.”

I was going to make a big deal about how OK Magazine was the first to report this and how OK is never right… but then Us Weekly “confirmed” it. According to Us Weekly, “An insider confirmed the news after rumors surfaced earlier on Wednesday, July 9, that the Hitch actress is seven months pregnant.” Ah, so that is why Eva has gone so far underground lately, it’s because she’s hiding a bump. SEVEN MONTHS PREGNANT. Damn. Way to keep a secret, y’all.

Jennifer Aniston has prosthetic face scars for ‘Cake’: is she trying for an Oscar?

Last Friday, we had some of the first photos of Jennifer Aniston on the California set of Cake, her new drama (dramedy?) which has Aniston looking… well, kind of rough. You have to remember, through Aniston’s career, her movies can usually be described as “the one where she wore all the scarves” or “the one where she was in the bikini” or “the one with that cute white dress.” My point? Aniston usually makes a point to only do films where she looks cute and has a great wardrobe. Cake is not that kind of film.

Anyway, these are some assorted new and newish photos from the set. I’d heard that Aniston’s character had some kind of backstory that involved chronic pain, but as you can see in some of these photos, Aniston is wearing prosthetic/makeup scars on her face. That surprised me. I think she’s got some scars on her hands too, or maybe the lighting is just weird. So… start your engines. Everyone is already talking about how Aniston is “uglying up” for an Oscar bid, like Charlize Theron in Monster or something. I don’t know though… you can give her bad clothes (and seriously, her outfits are NOT CUTE in this movie) and scars, but will she still flap her hands, pout and tilt her head like Rachel Green? If so, maybe not so much with the Oscar talk.

That being said, I applaud Jennifer for mixing it up at long last. Cake is the first film Aniston is executive producing through her recently inked deal with Shenghua Entertainment/Cinelou Films, which basically means that Chinese producers want a foothold in Hollywood. Shenghua has financed Cake for $7-10 million, which means it will probably be eligible for Independent Spirit Awards. Maybe that’s what Aniston should aim for.

Lea Michele on Cory Monteith’s death: ‘working is no harder than being at home’

Lea Michele was on Ellen yesterday, where she really opened up about how she dealt with grief and loss following her boyfriend, Cory Monteith’s death this year. Before we cover more about Lea’s interview, which is above, I want to get it out of the way that I disagree with rumors that Cory and Lea were a showmance. Those story were based on a blind item, and as a gossip blogger I know that many blind items are made up. Some are accurate and based on solid leads, but many are made up. So I don’t think it’s fair to Lea to trot those out, especially based on how well she seems to be coping in the wake of Cory’s death. People handle grief differently, Lea definitely has a type A personality, and on Ellen I think Lea really explained herself well.

Lea said that, for her, being home and being reminded of Cory daily was harder than going to work and being distracted, basically. She also said that she was so grateful to Kate Hudson (who guested on Glee) for letting Lea and her family stay at Kate’s home right after Cory died in July. It was easier for Lea not be surrounded by memories of Cory. The interview touched me and I got the impression that Lea was working hard to hold it together. She’s an actress, though, she’s skilled at presenting herself and that’s important to her. Here’s some of what she said:

On Kate Hudson letting her stay at her house
She was so wonderful to basically give me her home to myself and my family. It was so helpful to just basically have a safe place to process and to just have a minute to breathe before getting back to my house which has a lot of memoriesand stuff. So, being some place else to just have a moment was really nice.

On the paparazzi hunting her
It’s pretty intense and then if you smile, ‘she’s so happy!’ and then if you look sad like ‘she’s terrible.’ It’s really hard there’s so many emotions, and to have people watching every step of the way.

On going back to work on Glee
Ryan Murphy came to Kate’s house and said ‘what do you want to do?’ I said ‘I have to go back to work… they’re my family.’ What people also don’t understand is that going to work is no harder than being at home. And being in the house and opening up a closet and seeing a pair of shoes. Grief goes with you every day, whatever you’re doing… So I’d rather be at work with the people that I love that are going through the same thing… At the end of the day, I feel so safe there.

On people saying she’s strong
I really feel like I’m still trying to figure out all of this. It’s been only a few months, but my mom has experienced a lot of loss in her life and she told me ‘there is an empowerment that comes with grief. At some point you find it.’ It’s very hard, but you will find it. I think that at a certain point you can chose to either fall from this or you can chose to rise and that’s what I’m just trying to do my best for him because I know that’s what he would have wanted.

[From The Ellen show via Huffington Post]

The stuff about seeing Cory’s shoes really got me. That’s almost exactly what a friend ofmine said years ago when her husband died in a car accident. She said that she saw his giant shoes under the bed and kept expecting him to come back. She was a lot like Lea, she seemed so pulled together after a tragedy and I was struck by how practical she was.

Ellen shared a saying that “when your heart is broken the cracks let the light in.” Then they talked about how Cory revealed, for the first time on Ellen, that he was seeing Lea. Lea blushed while recalling how Cory told her the story at home that day, and how happy she was because he was usually so private. She said “I literally lived every day of my life feeling like the luckiest girl in the whole world. I just thought he was the greatest man. At that moment, that memory, means so much to me.

Beyonce dropped her new album on iTunes last night with no advanced publicity

Maybe it’s because Beyonce was feeling light-headed from her vegan diet. Maybe she was just running out of stunts after all of her meat-themed clothing. Or maybe Beyonce is just mad that she was only nominated for one Grammy this year, as part of a collaboration with her husband. Whatever it was, Beyonce decided to drop her newalbum on iTunes at midnight and now the world is all “QUEEN B!” What’s interesting to me at least is that this is the album Beyonce has been working on for the better part of a year and a half. Word is that she scrapped nearly everything she had recorded earlier this year and started over because she wants this album (the album is called BEYONCE) to be her big comeback.

Beyoncé has created a holiday frenzy – delighting fans by announcing a surprise new album just before midnight Friday, then secretly releasing it immediately after the announcement.

With 14 songs and 17 videos and collaborators such as Jay Z, Drake and Frank Ocean, the self-titled album also features on its closing track, “Blue,” performed by Beyoncé with daughter Blue Ivy.

“I see music,” Beyoncé said in a video announcement on her Facebook page. “It’s more than just what I hear. When I’m connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they’re all connected to the music.”

Inspiration for the new work, she says, came from watching Michael Jackson reveal his landmark Thriller album in the ’80s.

“I miss that immersive experience,” she says. “Now people only listen to a few seconds of song on the iPods and they don’t really invest in the whole experience. It’s all about the single, and the hype. It’s so much that gets between the music and the art and the fans. I felt like, I don’t want anybody to get the message, when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.”

This is her fifth studio album and first since 4 two years ago. The new album is released exclusively on iTunes.

[From People]

“It’s all about the single, and the hype. It’s so much that gets between the music and the art and the fans.” I feel like this is a pointed criticism, specifically at Lady Gaga. But it could easily be about Katy Perry too, I guess. Both Katy and Gaga released their albumsa few months ago, and Katy “won” with how she released Prism and Gaga “lost” because she over-hyped and badly managed the release of ARTPOP. Beyonce’s gamble is that people love her so much they’re going to be crazy-excited for her album with little to no advance publicity. Will it work out?

Beyonce also released a ton of “teasers” for the songs. I’m including a few below.

Justin Timberlake’s team is miffed he only got 7 Grammy nods instead of 10

Justin Timberlake

Poor Justin Timberlake can’t win no matter what he does. He very badly wants to be a well-respected actor, but critics won’t let him be great. Audiences don’t much like the idea of heading out to watch JT at their local multiplexes either. So Justin is forced to earn his millions by “acting” through his music, which is such “an elevated idea.” Not to mention his attitude when he stated earlier this year, “My music career hangs over me like a cloud.

I give JT a hard time on a regular basis, but he really is an incredibly talented musician. The two 20/20 Experience albums are filler crap or what I like to call “Walgreens music,” but I listened to Future Love/Sex Sounds during my last run and remembered how charismatic he used to be. JT was so much fun, you know? Now he’s completely full of himself, and he’s surrounded himself with fellow whiners.

Justin has kept quiet in the wake of last week’s Grammy nominations, but his team is complaining for him. JT earned 7 nods including Best Pop Solo Performance, but he failed to scoop the “big” categories, including Album, Song and Record of the year. Justin’s producer, Rob Knox, and music supervisor, Scott Vener, couldn’t help but vent all over Twitter:

Justin Timberlake

Ugh, these guys. Justin could have told them to chill out or delete their tweets, but no. That hasn’t happened, so I can only assume that they’ve all been bitching together in private. I wish JT understood how fortunate he is. He’s sold more albums (2.3 million) than any other artist this year! JT needs to realize that he can’t win all of the awards all the time. Especially since he doesn’t even want to be a musician.

Oprah Winfrey on not being a mother: ‘If I had kids, my kids would hate me’

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey covers the latest issue of Hollywood Reporter to promote her role in TheButler. I’m wayyy behind on my Oscar viewing this season, but if the SAG nominationsare any indication (and they usually are), then Oprah will likely get an Oscar nod this year. Will she win? Who knows. She’ll probably be up against Jennifer Lawrence, who is an academy darling if there ever was one. Plus Julia Roberts, who can’t be counted out as a mere nominee by any stretch.

The photoshoot here is standard, and I’m so used to seeing Oprah photoshopped on thecover of her own magazine that I don’t even know what she really looks like. This interview is pretty good though. Oprah says there will never be another Oprah, which is absolutely true (sorry, Dina Lohan). The more interesting part is how Oprah explains why she never had kids. It sucks that childless female celebrities always get asked these sorts of questions, but the O handles her response well:

Ending “The Oprah Winfrey Show”: “The only thing I ever questioned about leaving [the show] was the timing. Should I have waited and then started OWN separately? Should I have tried to start it earlier? But the actual ending of theshow, I never wanted to be in the position of ever having people say, ‘You shoulda come out of the rain.’”

She’s generous: “When you’re the most successful person in your family, in your neighborhood and in your town, everybody thinks you’re the First National Bankand you have to figure out for yourself where those boundaries are. I got to thepoint where nobody ever asked me for anything less than $5,000. I felt pressured for a long time to say yes, because I thought, ‘I can’t lie and say I don’t have it. My salary is printed in the paper. I’ve bought more houses and cars than I can even tell you.”

She wants to do Broadway: “It’s something I would like to do, but I’d like to get settled in my house, have a life and then make the next move. I’d just like to be inthe space where I really feel like I have nothing to prove. I think I’m just about there.”

On her successor: “There won’t be a ‘next Oprah.’ Just like there won’t be another Barbara Walters, Aretha Franklin or Whitney Houston. People who make their mark in the way that they made it, that’s it.”

Why she isn’t a mother: “If I had kids, my kids would hate me. They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would’ve probably been them.”

Her BFF Gayle King always wanted kids: “Gayle [now a mother of two] was thekind of kid who, in seventh grade home ec class, was writing down her name andthe names of her children. While she was having those kind of daydreams, I was having daydreams about how I could be Martin Luther King.”

[From Hollywood Reporter]

That last part about Gayle could be considered some slight shade, right? I don’t think Oprah meant it that way at all. They’re the best of friends and appreciate each other’s differences. I totally get what Oprah is saying about how she simply didn’t have room in her life to be a mother. I feel that way sometimes too, and I am a mother. Kids take up so much damn time (and some days are tougher than others). I’d never (EVER) wish my daughter away, but she is a little vacuum of resources.
